Abstract

As a maritime nation with a strategic position, Indonesia relies on ports as key drivers of economic growth. The increasing volume of imported goods via sea routes adds pressure to container terminals, extending dwelling time at ports. This situation requires solutions for operational efficiency, especially at New Makassar Container Terminal 1. One challenge is optimizing the loading and unloading process, particularly during container relocations that can increase operational costs and time. This study aims to implement a genetic algorithm to reduce container relocation time during unloading at the terminal. Using a heuristic method, this research develops a simulation model expected to be applicable for improving operational efficiency at New Makassar Container Terminal 1. The research method involves collecting container data from New Makassar Container Terminal 1 and simulating using Unity software. The genetic algorithm is applied to determine the optimal solution for minimizing unnecessary container movements. Each test scenario is measured to obtain the algorithm parameters with the best fitness value. The research results show that the simulation based on the genetic algorithm successfully reduced the average dwelling time by 89,59% compared to the actual condition. This demonstrates that the container relocation system with a genetic algorithm can enhance terminal efficiency. Thus, this study significantly contributes to the development of technology-based solutions for optimizing port operations.
